The Africa Regional Workshop on Family Law scheduled to be held in person took place on October 4th-6th, 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya. Partners Musawah Musawah, SIHA, Equality Now and FEMNET, through their Africa Network on Family Laws, organized this event bringing together WRA/Os from over 15 African countries.
The workshop saw a healthy participation that throughout brought together 50 participants from the civil society, academia, religious leaders, and policy makers from over 15 countries in the continent.Participants used the platform to voice out their positions on key family law issues such as child marriage, violence against women and girls, inequality in marriages, divorce rights, etc. They were introduced to the research findings on family laws and reform efforts in the region as part of Equality Now’s Global Campaign for Equality in Family Law, and Musawah’s Campaign for Justice in Muslim Family Laws.
Over the course of 3 days and 12 sessions, 50 participants were strengthened in their knowledge, strategies and network to articulate and advocate for their calls for reform on issues of family laws in civil, religious and customary frameworks. The workshop created space for WRA/Os to exchange challenges and reform strategies which will inadvertently strengthen regional solidarity amongst feminist advocates from the 5 target countries to collaborate on joint initiatives in 2022 onwards.
At the end of the event, the Africa Network on Family Law Reform was launched through a press briefing and shared statement.
