Asha Hagi Elmi, current Chairperson and co-founder of Save Somali Women and Children (SSWC) has over the last 30 years worked tirelessly to steer advocacy initiatives for a safe and sustainable Somalia by supporting women to overcome marginalization, violence, and poverty in their communities in Somalia.

In recognition of her enormous efforts around women’s rights activism, Asha was awarded the 2023 International Women’s Day Award during the Annual Award Ceremony in Mogadishu.

The event was presided over by the Prime Minister of the Federal Government Somalia, His Excellency Hon. Hamza Abdi Bare.

As the WeCannotWait Consortium, we are proud to identify with women like Asha – that have stood up and refused to remain silent in the face of cruelty; women that lead with feminist principles and ultimately tackled the roots of oppressive structures and social norms that hold back progress for all people, including women and girls; and where they can, women that bring a band of sisters along with them to make sure that no women is left behind. This is the true definition of sisterhood!

Borne of the social justice movement, the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network is an indigenous African women’s rights network with a soul. We are convinced beyond any doubt that if African women are given the space, they will drive change in this region and beyond. Defying presumptions about African women, SIHA has been carried on the shoulders of numerous African women’s rights activists and has been sustained by their relentless commitment to their cause.
