Mercy for the martyrs, healing for the wounded, and dignity for the raped.

The suffering of women and the violence against them still paints the darkest picture in the tragedy of Sudan and all developing countries, and on top of the moral and material violence that women suffer as a result of conflicts in the Darfur region, and conflict in general, there are those in the state of South Darfur who pay their lives as a result of male domination and oppression inherited with impunity. The perpetrators are not punished, which paves the way for the continuation of the recurrence of violence against women.

During this year, the various localities of the state witnessed a significant increase in the killing of women and girls (as a result of sexual and domestic violence). The latest of this was the tragedy of the assassination of Mrs. Maysa Muhammadin, who was slaughtered by her husband, who works as a soldier in the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), on the morning of Sunday, January 15, 2023.

We, in the Gender Equality Network, South Darfur, condemn in the strongest terms these violations of human rights, and we call on all sectors of society and civil society to take positive and rapid action to address these violations. We also call on the authorities to investigate these crimes, achieve justice, and ensure that the perpetrators do not go unpunished.

Borne of the social justice movement, the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA) Network is an indigenous African women’s rights network with a soul. We are convinced beyond any doubt that if African women are given the space, they will drive change in this region and beyond. Defying presumptions about African women, SIHA has been carried on the shoulders of numerous African women’s rights activists and has been sustained by their relentless commitment to their cause.
